Vivo has worked in conjunction with Synaptics to make the first smartphone with a fingerprint scanner integrated into its display. The company unveiled their near-final product at CES. The company had already announced last year at MWC Shanghai it had developed the “in-display fingerprint scanning” technology for a prototype phone. That version used an ultrasonic sensor and was created with support from Qualcomm.
But the near-final design uses an optical signal to the sensor can see right through the display and be developed with Synaptics.
In order for this to happen, the current design will only be compatible with OLED displays, as they are transparent enough to let the sensor detect a finger above the glass. This would mean that this implementation would not work LCD displays, making this the only major limitation.
